2024 Kennedy Center Honoree Arturo Sandoval, a virtuoso in jazz and classical music with ten Grammy Awards, headlines an evening promising a harmonious fusion of genres. The concert opens with Adam Schoenberg’s “Cool Cat,” inspired by Los Angeles’ P22 and George Gershwin’s “Cuban Overture” paying homage to Sandoval’s Cuban heritage and blending Cuban rhythms with rich instrumentation. Paul Hindemith’s “Symphonic Metamorphosis” showcases the orchestra’s prowess, and Sandoval’s own magnum opus, “Concerto for Trumpet No. 2” is accentuated by his display and versatility in trumpet, piano, vocals, and storytelling. The evening concludes with Rachmaninoff’s emotive Adagio, offering a profound musical journey of introspection.
